According to Amnesty International, at least 2,707 executions were recorded globally in 2025, marking the highest level since 1981. The organization suggests that the actual number may be even greater.

Iran was responsible for a substantial portion of these executions, with 2,159 cases attributed to the country alone. This trend indicates a renewed emphasis on capital punishment within Iran.

While these figures are alarming, there are indications that some progress may be occurring in the global landscape regarding the death penalty.
