Despite his electoral success, Sanchez is currently under indictment for campaign finance violations. Prosecutors are reportedly seeking a prison sentence in connection with these charges.

The runoff will take place on June 7, where Sanchez will compete against populist right candidate Keiko Fujimori, amid a backdrop of widespread insecurity and public mistrust.
